Overview

At Boulder ZED our new homes strive for a low carbon footprint through future, low operating energy requirements and low first cost strategies.   For our speculative projects we try to utilize as much of an existing home as possible. We routinely use most of the existing foundation, portions of exterior masonry and first floor deck framing.  From there we add structural foundation components to right size the new home foorprint.

To get to Net Zero we take a conservation approach first.  The envelope efficiency is maximized utilizing lots of insulation, minimal thermal bridging and very tight air sealing. We splurge on well insulated, tuned windows.  These details considerably lower our heating and cooling demands so our energy systems are much smaller then typical homes.

For energy systems we have evolved to an all electric home with enough roof space to provide solar PV to offset most, if not all, of our power needs. Although we have implemented solar thermal water heating systems in the past, we feel the required backup heating systems needed in our cold climate offset their efficiency. We prefer small forced air systems with heating and cooling from ground source heat pumps.  Electric induction ranges and butcher block counter tops still cater to the home chef.

We pride ourselves on the healthiness of our homes. We go far beyond code requirements with robust air exchange systems, use of low to no VOC materials, conditioned crawl spaces, soil gas mitigation and moisture management through the construction process.

Lastly, we are forward thinkers providing low cost future proof design details. Our garage roofs are oriented optimally for more solar PV to offset the electric care further towards a net zero lifestyle. In the home there is pre-plumbed, grey water access and prewire for networking/web access to reduce Electric Magnetic Field (EMF) exposure.

In the end, our whole system, green building approach while chasing third party certifications help us create uber comfortable, healthy and efficient homes.
